New Study: Anti-Abortion Laws Don’t Reduce Abortion Rates. Contraception Does.

Abortion rates are at an all-time low in the developed world, having dropped by more than 40 percent over the past 25 years. But in developing countries—many of which have outlawed abortion and make contraception difficult to access—the rate of abortions has stayed nearly constant, according to a new report from the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization.

The Affordable Care Act is Great for Women of Reproductive Age

A report from the Guttmacher Institute found that the proportion of women between the ages of 15 and 44 without insurance dropped by 22 percent in the ACA’s first year. Between 2013 and 2014, the percentage decreased from 17.9 percent to 13.9 percent, according to the report, which was released on Tuesday. That was largely a result of increased Medicaid coverage under the act, which saw a 17.4 percent increase among women of reproductive age.

Women Wrongly Believe They Can’t Get Pregnant

More than half of unintended pregnancies in America happen to the 10 percent of women who are not using contraception. A new survey of 50 women seeking abortions from the Guttmacher Institute reveals the psychology behind not wanting to be pregnant but not doing anything to not get pregnant. Most participants believed they were at a low risk of pregnancy for a variety of reasons requiring various degrees of magical thinking.
